The Roque de Los Muchachos Observatory, in the borough of Garafía, at 2,420 m above sea level, is one of the most complete telescope complexes in the world. Thanks to its clear, dark skies practically all year round, La Palma has become one of the best sites on Earth for astronomy observation.
It was opened in 1985 and it is run by the Canary Island Astrophysics Institute (IAC). Situated at the highest spot on the island, it is a popular destination for visits during the day by people wishing to enjoy a spectacular view of the rest of the island and, on a clear day, of the neighbouring islands of Tenerife, La Gomera and El Hierro.
From Santa Cruz de La Palma it is a 40 km road trip to Roque de los Muchachos, but there is also access from the borough of Garafía.
The Roque de Los Muchachos Observatory is open to visitors, depending on the weather. Visits are programmed several times a week, provided they have been requested in advance, via a simple procedure that applicants can carry out directly in the IAC offices. You can fill in the application form you will find on our web site www.iac.es and the IAC will confirm the visit when a group is complete. Schools, universities and astronomy institutions can also visit the telescopes by appointments, by forming specific groups.
There are no restrictions on visiting the observatory area, except between 7 p.m. and 8 a.m. Practical information:
